Language is a powerful and important tool in shaping ideas, perceptions and ultimately, public attitudes. Persons with disabilities are asking Canadians and the media, in particular, to use respectful terms when writing and speaking about them or about issues that affect their lives. They are also asking that images chosen to portray them are respectful and do not reinforce outdated stereotypes. A Way with Words and Images: Suggestions for the portrayal of persons with disabilities is a booklet published by Social Development Canada that is easily referenced for tips and guidelines.
