At Citizen Advocacy we're not curing disease or finding answers to world peace. Our goals aren't that lofty. In fact, we work in small and quiet ways that we believe have a hugely positive impact on those who count on us. As an example, let's look at Richard Marion and Maurice Kingsbury. They've been getting together for coffee every Saturday since 1978. Now, while you may be thinking, "that's some coffee," the truth is: that's some friendship.
Living with mental illness since he was 25, Maurice looks forward to his weekly get-togethers. But he's not the only one. As Richard puts it, "It's a nice feeling helping someone who didn't get any easy breaks, who doesn't have a lot of people outside. It makes a little difference in Maurice's day-to-day life." Maurice's response? "I have a better life." We couldn't have said it more poignantly ourselves.
Maurice is one of nearly 300 people with disabilities who are supported by Citizen Advocacy. With more matches between volunteer advocates and people with disabilities being made and supported, the need for financial resources remains a constant challenge.
